WHO ARE THEY?
OPOPO United FC were formed in 2019 as a member of the Duluth Amateur Soccer League (DASL). The club was formerly known as Hibbing United FC prior to a rebrand for the upcoming season after moving their home base to Grand Rapids, MN. The club was formed by Eric Njimegni, a former Wolfpack staple who wanted to provide soccer players in the Iron Range of Minnesota a place to develop their play. The name "OPOPO" stands for One People, One Power, in reference to OPOPO FC, the soccer club Njimegni grew up playing for in his native country of Cameroon. The club has run a youth development camp based in Hibbing, MN called OPOPO Soccer Academy since 2017.
HOW DID THEY DO LAST YEAR?
OPOPO United FC competed in the Duluth Amateur Soccer League during the 2021 season. The Lions finished sixth place in the league with a 2-6-2 record, losing in the first round of playoffs to perennial power, Portside FC. OPOPO United also played in the DASL Indoor League this past winter, finishing one point behind Hayward Wolfpack FC with a 4-4-1 record, losing to the Wolfpack in the league playoffs.
LOOKING FORWARD:
This will be OPOPO United FC's first match of the 2022 season, and they will compete in the Duluth Amateur Soccer League this upcoming season. Several Wolfpack players double roster for the Lions during non-WPASL gamedays.
HISTORY AGAINST OPOPO United FC:
HWFC lead the all-time series against OPOPO United FC with a 2-1-0 record. The last match between the squads was in 2020 with the Wolfpack taking home a 4-1 win.
