Superior City FC earn another shutout win, remain on top in UPSL debut season

GAME SUMMARY:

On Saturday night, Superior City FC played host to Worthington Community FC, another new club to the United Premier Soccer League. Two fast paced teams made for a very intense, physical match, and it was a battle of the back lines all game long. The game began quickly, with both squads finding shots in the first few minutes of the game. Superior struck gold in the 12th minute, when Mally Lumsden's shot was deflected to a wide open Ryan Tomsche, who blasted the ball into the bottom-right corner to give the home squad a one-goal lead. A collision between Harry Ambler and a Worthington midfielder gave both teams a break in the 19th minute, but the game did not slow. Lumsden had two prime chances in the 22nd and 25th minutes, but both rockets were punched aside by Worthington's Kody Honius. Los Toros' best chance of the night found a Worthington forward wide open in front of the net in the 38th minute after a cleared corner kick, but the missile shot heading into the top corner was parried aside by an acrobatic Walker Marquardt. Worthington's Velasquez earned a yellow card in the 41st minute after a rough challenge, and Lumsden found the goalkeepers hands again in the 42nd minute off of a free kick. Both teams went into the half battered, but still searching for the decisive next goal.

The second half started off with Superior finding some strong possession. Jordan Finneran fired a shot on net in the 52nd minute, but Honius was up to the challenge and kept the game close. Nick Braun and Lumsden had good chances in the 60th and 62nd minutes, but both shots narrowly missed frame. The game picked up intensity, with Worthington desperately searching for a tying goal. Worthington's Morales picked up a yellow card on a hard tackle, Superior's Lumsden was shown yellow due to dissent on a missed foul, and Worthington's Guardado added to the yellow card tally with another hard foul, all in the space of six minutes. Worthington continued to push, but Superior sub Mark Fehringer deflated any pressure build up the middle and the Superior spine composed of Matti Sysimaki, Nick Braun and Raggi Carvalho did not break, as Worthington's chance in the dying minutes was nicely handled by Marquardt. Superior picked up their third shutout win of the season and find themselves on top of the UPSL Midwest-West with a perfect 4-0-0 record going into another busy week.
