Superior City Men's continue winning ways in St. Cloud

Updated: May 14, 2023

GAME SUMMARY:

For the first time in Superior City FC history, the boys played in the sun and over 50 degree weather. The perfect atmosphere for a shutout win. Superior traveled to St. Cloud for a Thursday evening game against Granite City FC, hoping to keep their winning streak alive. The game lacked intensity throughout most of the match, with Superior controlling the ball for the majority of the contest. Mally Lumsden finally broke through and added to his UPSL scoring account in the 33rd minute, when Ryan Tomsche's through ball found his run, which was finished off with a twine-tickling finish to the right of the keeper. Space began to open up, and a call for a penalty after Siji Gonzalez's shot hit an arm out from the defender's body was rejected by the head official. Superior kept the pressure on and Matti Sysimaki was taken down in the box on a free kick, earning the squad's first penalty kick of the year. Lumsden stepped up and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner to secure his brace in the 45th minute. The game went into the half with Superior up by two, the most dangerous lead in soccer.

Granite City had their best chance early in the half on a nice run and shot in the 18 yard box from Andrew Pitzner that was coolly punched aside by Dru Senich. Subs started to pour in from the visitors around the 60 minute mark, with all bench players getting time in the game. Guilherme Nadur, back for his first game after finishing his spring season with St. Scholastica, scored on his first shot of the game. Siji Gonzalez found space and crossed a perfect ball in to Nadur, who slammed it home past GCFC keeper Eli Hamberger. The rest of the game consisted of some back and forth action between both teams, without much action. Superior went home victorious, with Dru Senich earning the clean sheet in his UPSL debut.
